Home Worship:  Sunday Adoration, Morning and Evening Prayer

Sunday Adoration
Following the directive of Indiana Governor Holcomb to stay-at-home, Bishop Jennifer has closed the doors of all Episcopal congregations in the diocese.  We at Peace Episcopal Church will abide by the bishop's communique as a witness and example to our community. These unprecedented times call on us to find creative ways of worship. I am inviting all members of Peace to join together in heart and spirit for Sunday Adoration, this Sunday at 10:00 am. The service of Sunday Adoration is printed below. It is a service that honors and blesses the Holy Name of Jesus by recognizing his presence among us.  As an aid to worship, I would recommend that you find a quiet place. If you have a cross, or an  icon of Christ, or a bible, place it on a table and put a lighted candle beside it.  Jesus said, "I am the light of the world: those who follow me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8: 12

As a way of centering yourself, use the Jesus Prayer to quiet your mind:
Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Say the Jesus Prayer as long as you need until your heart and mind are quieted. (Some people are disquieted by the last phrase in the sentence of the Jesus Prayer: have mercy on me, a sinner. Much of the consternation comes from a misunderstanding of the word sin. As I have stated before our sins are not our private indiscretions, sin is where we have missed the mark. Sin is where we have strayed from the path of Jesus. Sin is the state of mind that disconnects us from God.) Never before in my life-time have we so desperately needed to re-connect to God.

When you have centered yourself begin the service. You are not alone. Your faith community is connected to you as we all connect to God through his Son, Jesus Christ. When you have finished Adoration, remember that you can continue your time of worship by joining Schley Cox, our Assisting Minister, on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. on FaceBook Live for Morning Prayer.

Also, under study and resouces at the bottome of the page is a link to Mission St. Claire.  This site provides a way to pray Morning and Evening Prayer online.

Faithfully,
Fr. Pat Connell

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord, open our lips; and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,  is now, and will be forever. Amen.

      Psalm 51

1    Have mercy on me, O God, according to your
                            loving-kindness; *
in your great compassion blot out my offenses.

2    Wash me through and through from my wickedness *
and cleanse me from my sin.

3    For I know my transgressions, *
and my sin is ever before me.

4    Against you only have I sinned *
and done what is evil in your sight.

5    And so you are justified when you speak *
    and upright in your judgment.

6    Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth, *
a sinner from my mother's womb.

7    For behold, you look for truth deep within me, *
and will make me understand wisdom secretly

8    Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure; *
wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.

9    Make me hear of joy and gladness, *
that the body you have broken may rejoice.

10    Hide your face from my sins *
and blot out all my iniquities.

11    Create in me a clean heart, O God, *
and renew a right spirit within me.

12    Cast me not away from your presence *
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

13    Give me the joy of your saving help again *
and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.

14    I shall teach your ways to the wicked, *
and sinners shall return to you.

15    Deliver me from death, O God, *
and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness,
    O God of my salvation.

16    Open my lips, O Lord, *
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

17    Had you desired it, I would have offered sacrifice, *
but you take no delight in burnt-offerings.

18    The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit; *
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

A Reading from Holy Scripture

let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
Matthew 16:24
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.

O good Jesus, hear me.
Within your wounds conceal me.
Do not permit me to be parted from you.
From the evil foe protect me.
At the hour of my death call me.
And bid me come to you,
to praise you with all your saints
for ever and ever.
Amen.

An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that you are here in my home with me. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since the corona virus prevents me from receiving you in the Holy Eucharist, come spiritually into my heart at this time. I embrace you and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen.

The Our Father/Lord’s Prayer

The Conclusion
A Franciscan Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
